Obvious, Read

Monday, January 19th, 2009

I say to you, this morning, that if you have never found something so dear and precious to you that you will die for it, then you aren’t fit to live.
You may be 38 years old, as I happen to be, and one day, some great opportunity stands before you and calls upon you to stand for some great principle, some great issue, some great cause. And you refuse to do it because you are afraid.
You refuse to do it because you want to live longer. You’re afraid that you will lose your job, or you are afraid that you will be criticized or that you will lose your popularity, or you’re afraid that somebody will stab or shoot or bomb your house. So you refuse to take a stand.
Well, you may go on and live until you are ninety, but you are just as dead at 38 as you would be at ninety.
And the cessation of breathing in your life is but the belated announcement of an earlier death of the spirit.
You died when you refused to stand up for right.
You died when you refused to stand up for truth.
You died when you refused to stand up for justice.

Andrew Wyeth, Rest In Peace.

I think I can speak for Jamie and myself when I say that Wyeth was one of the greatest living artists. It is sad to hear that he has passed (at 91 years of age) but he pumped out an incredible amount of work. He died in his sleep. On another note they found 240 new pieces never seen by the public. His books are always lying around the house and his work has such a great feel.

Happy New Beers

Saturday, January 3rd, 2009

We find ourselves yet again in the recognition of that man made invention called “The New Year.” What have you done with your “old year?” Have you lived it quite efficaciously? Have you squandered it away in a state of less-than conscious activity? Undoubtedly, you have done something with it, if only a conversion of yesterday into today. How will you meet your “new year?” With resolution and determination. Another year shall not slip through thy fingers supinely! Or maybe an apathetic tone has beset your existence, and perhaps your “care” mechanism is in dire need of repair. Nevertheless, this is your chance, your last chance at a decent new year. Who knows if 2010 will arrive in time, if at all? The word is that 2011 and 2012 have already skipped town.

What you HAVE done is perfectly irrelevant. What you WILL do is even more so. And at the risk of sounding like a chain email, the only thing worth a damn is what you ARE doing. So leave your house this instant and attack the world, bare-toothed and brazen, clamoring for clarification. Or, if you find yourself away from home but too often, go home and face reality with insouciance. With feverish fervor or in deep reflection, break a twig in half, kiss your neighbor. Converse with an old woman, converse with an enemy, converse with your only enemy. Get 5 words down on paper, sketch, whisper to your girlfriend that you still love her. Don’t sell yourself short. Don’t buy yourself high. Just be real. For me?
